Two weeks into the NFL season, and once again the league has proven it’s harder to predict football than bet horses. Let’s obvserve some of the wacky goings-on just two games into the season:
- Denver is 2-0. Wow. Not many people saw this one coming. The Broncos endured one of the worst offseasons in recent memory–they fired their head coach/general manager, who was the face of the franchise for the past decade; their franchise quarterback demanded (and recieved) a trade, at 10 cents on the dollar, no less; their star wide out pouted, was suspended, and generally caused a huge distraction in the aftermath of the Cutler trade; their new head coach was nearly run out of town before he even coached his first game.
The Broncos haven’t run a gauntlet of juggernauts to open the season (Bengals, Browns) but, with the Raiders on tap this season, a 3-0 start looks very possible. Don’t get too excited, though, online betting fans; Dallas, New England, San Diego (twice), Baltimore, Pittsburgh, the Giants, Colts and Eagles are still on tap.
- Tennessee is 0-2. Unlike the Broncos, I expect the Titans to right the ship. 13-10 road loss–in overtime–to the defending Super Bowl Champions is forgivable. Last week’s defensive meltdown against Houston isn’t, but Tennessee is still one of the league’s more taletned teams. That said, the loss of defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz might have hurt more than most expected and, with a tough matchup against the Jets this weekend, an 0-3 start is totally possible. Though the Titans will eventually get untracked, that kind of a hole will be VERY tough to dig out of in the competitive AFC.
- Tom Brady is struggling badly. In fairness to Brady, he’s a victim of his own success–it shouldn’t be altogether surprising the quaterback is struggling. After all, he hadn’t played serious football in the past 21 months. Surely, anyone would be rusty with that kind of a layoff. The Jets deserve some credit, too, for their brilliant defensive effort last week. NFL week 3 matchups pit Brady and the Pats against Atlanta, and this is the perfect opportunity that he’s going to be just fine in time.
